Week of August 24, 2015

Welcome to 3rd Grade!

Thank you for coming to meet and greet this past week. It was great to see everyone! I know that you have this information already, but I wanted to put it online for you as well. I am looking forward to working with you and your child!

Parent Communication

·       In our classroom students will create a weekly newspaper and report on classroom happenings!  It is a way for them to communicate with you about our week at school. Along with our newspaper, I also have a classroom blog. Here I will post pictures of happenings in our classroom along with important dates that will also be included in our weekly newspaper. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or are wondering why something is happening, please feel free to call or email me anytime during the school year.

Spelling

·       New spelling lists will go home on Mondays. Students will take a pretest on Fridays to determine their new list for the following week. Post-tests will be taken on Fridays.

Homework

  • Students will have homework each week. Homework will come home on Mondays, and needs to be returned to school on Fridays. Please check the homework folder every Monday. There will always be spelling homework for the week. Additionally, part of your child's homework is to read 15 to 20 minutes several nights a week, if possible. Please help make a special time and place for this to happen. Sometimes there will be special assignments and math homework. Usually there will not be homework on weekends.

  • The homework is self-paced, so your child can choose to do comfortable amounts as needed, and this should help when you have those busy family nights where school is not on the menu. If you notice that your child is not able to do an assignment on his or her own, please write a note to me on the assignment.  I will contact you if your child is falling behind or turning in unfinished work. Outside of reading, homework should never exceed 20 minutes each night. It is meant as practice and to help build responsibility for homework as your child enters upper elementary.

  • From time to time there might be math homework as well, depending on the skill we are learning.

After School Plans

·       If your child’s usual end of the day plan happens to be different on a particular day, please send a note or call the elementary office. (i.e. riding the bus home with a friend).

Snack (optional)
  • Third graders eat lunch from 12:15 to 12:35 each day, which is a long time after most students have eaten breakfast. Students in our classroom will be allowed to bring an individual snack to be eaten in the morning. This snack is optional and will not be provided by the school. If you decide to send a snack with your child, please adhere to the following guidelines:
v  Snacks should be fairly healthy in nature (fruit, crackers, dry cereal, granola bar).

Other Information

  • P.B.I.S. is our “positive behavior” system being implemented building-wide.  As the year begins, every student will know about expected behaviors in all common areas of the school.  Listen for comments from your child.  They may be recognized with a “ticket” as they show positive behaviors that will be celebrated!

Our Classroom Expectations
·       Follow directions the first time.
·       Raise your hand for a turn to speak.
·       Walk in our classroom and school.
·       Take care of materials and each other.

·
·     On Fridays we will cover current events through Scholastic News (a mini “newspaper” for students to read and discuss as a classroom). You are welcome and encouraged to help your child find news items of interest to bring in once in a while to share with the class if you’d like.

I am truly excited about teaching third grade and I am looking forward to getting to know your child. I benefit from parent communication. Therefore, should you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email. I try to check my email several times throughout the day, but sometimes I don’t always get to my computer during breaks. If there is an urgent message that you’d like to give me, please call the school office rather than email.

Again, I am looking forward to working with you and your child! I can’t wait to begin our third grade adventure together!
