Dear Families,

On February 7, 2018, our grade will participate in Global School Play Day 2018 (GSPD.) February 7th is also an early dismissal at 1:00.  GSPD has been promoted by Psychology Today and is celebrated at schools around the world. You can learn more about the benefits of unstructured play by visiting the official GSPD website: www.globalschoolplayday.com.

We are inviting all of our students to bring in things to play with on February 7th. Here are some examples of things your child may bring in:

Non-Violent Toys (no weapons)
Legos
Blocks
Dolls/ Puppets
Toy cars
Board Games
Card games
Puzzles
*no electronic devices*
The only exception on the electronics rule would be a board game that has an electronic timer.

Though our play day time will be unstructured, students will be working on cooperation, negotiation, sharing, and communicating appropriately with our peers.  It is our hope that this day of play will inspire students and families to continue to make time for unstructured play during non-school hours.

Thanks for your support.

Thank you so much!

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. I want to wish you all a Happy New Year! Here a few reminders for the upcoming week.

Upcoming Dates

January 4- Classes resume

January 10- Recipe due for school project (See below)

January 19- No school

School Supplies
Many students may need some refreshed school supplies after the holiday break. New box of crayons, a few pencils and glue sticks are some of the most needed items. Please ask your child if they are in need of these items. Thank you so much! J

Class  Cookbook

Our third grade Journeys stories next week will be a section of Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Imagine a Recipe. One of the skills we will be working on is reviewing steps in order. For example, “first they mixed the batter and then they rolled out the dough”…etc.

As an added bonus, we’d like to create a class recipe book. You and your child may find a favorite recipe, holiday recipe or any other recipe that is a family favorite (main dish, appetizer, soup, cookie, dessert, etc.)

Please send a copy of the recipe to school with your child or email a copy to me at aschnoor@mountvernon.k12.ia.us  by Wednesday, January 10. We will design, organize, illustrate, and publish a class recipe book.

We’ll all enjoy the process and the new recipes!

Thank you for your help!
